Family Counselling is currently suspended until we are able to provide face to face counselling.
This will most likely be in September 2021.
Family counselling helps you to understand and cope better with the stresses and strains of family life.
Families can be a source of support, encouragement and love but sometimes relationships within families are put under strain and family members feel isolated and overlooked.
Every family has disagreements, often caused by the wear and tear of changes that occur over time. Usually these disagreements are short-lived and get resolved but sometimes they continue and cause stress that can affect everyone in the family.
Family counselling can help when siblings aren’t getting on, or parents and children are going through a divorce or separation. Forming a new family is a challenge and it is at this point that many parents contact Relate for some support to help everyone settle.
Who is it for?
You can see a Relate Family Counsellor individually, as a small group or the whole family together.
We won’t take sides or tell you what to do, we will encourage each family member to have a voice and help you resolve your differences together.
Together with your family counsellor, you will decide which family members will come to the sessions and how frequently you want to come. The choice will depend on what needs to be talked about and who it affects most.
Decide if you would prefer your counselling face to face at one of our venues or whether you would rather have booked phone counselling or webcam sessions. If you’re not sure which you’d prefer, take a look at the online and phone counselling pages or give us a call.
If you want face to face counselling, Relate will ask you to come for a consultation with a counsellor. This session is to talk about your difficulties and to explore what help would be appropriate for you. The counsellor will explain what counselling involves and answer any questions you might have. If at the end of the consultation it is agreed that Family counselling may be helpful we will ask you for details of your availability and will contact you when an appointment becomes available. You will see the same counsellor each time.
Is there a cost?
It costs Relate £50 to provide a session of counselling so any donation received is appreciated. We are a not-for-profit service and the amount you donate can be discussed with your counsellor.
